The unique cycling innovation competition for better cities, better cycling ecosystems and cycling technology is back at Velo-city 2022, Ljubljana. Solve Ljubljana’s challenges, upgrade our cycling, win our hearts and win one of the prizes:

  • 1st PRIZE*:

    • 17,000 €, out of which is 10,000 € in cash, 5,000 € in billboard space, 1,000 € in Velo-city 2022 conference ticket and 1,000 € in coworking space at Technology park Ljubljana
    • 6 months of Ljubljana’s support to implement / test-bed your solution in Ljubljana

  • 2nd PRIZE*

    • 4,000 €, out of which is 2,000 € in cash, 1,000 € in Velo-city 2022 conference ticket  and 1,000 € coworking space at Technology park Ljubljana

  • 3rd PRIZE*:

    • 3,000 €, out of which is 1,000 € in cash, 1,000 € in Velo-city 2022 conference ticket and 1,000 € coworking space at Technology park Ljubljana

* The cash prizes are the total amount and are subject to taxes in Slovenia and in your country. The cash prizes are to be used for the implementation of the solution in Ljubljana. The price for the billboards does not include the design and printing of the jumbos; the billboards are operated in Slovenia by the company Europlakat. The coworking space in the Ljubljana Technology Park is to be used within the next 12 months.

All three winners will benefit from key exposure with a pitch on the main stage of Velo-city 2022.

Smart Pedal Pitch is an international competition taking place at Velo-city every year, seeking the latest market-ready cycling innovations to shape the future of urban cycling. It is a unique opportunity for startups and SMEs to participate or even create a crucial turning point in the process towards healthier, sustainable and economically dynamic city life.

This time we are offering you the chance to present your idea for cycling innovations for (and in) the streets of Ljubljana – European Green capital 2016 and European Best Destination 2022.

Ten companies will be invited to the semi-finals, but only three to the plenary session at the world's leading cycling conference Velo-city 2022 in Ljubljana, where they will have the chance to present their idea to the judges and the international audience to win a cash prize and a 6 months proof of concept in Ljubljana!

We are proud and excited to organise the 3rd edition of the Smart Pedal Pitch. The first two editions took place in Dublin at Velo-city 2019 and Lisbon at Velo-city 2021. 

The Smart Pedal Pitch 2022 is organised by the City of Ljubljana and Technology Park Ljubljana in cooperation with the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF), Cycling Industries Europe (CIE) and local partners.

PITCH CHALLENGE AND APPLICATION PROCESS

We invite you to surprise us with the most innovative and market-ready cycling technology solution that addresses the challenges of Ljubljana. These are the preferred fields but feel free to wander beyond:

  1. Community-engagement solutions
  2. ‘Future-tech’ solutions 
  3. Inclusiveness solutions 
  4. Urban & Infrastructure solutions
  5. Other fields – tourism, policy, green, circular

 

Application process

  • Submission of applications - by May 25, 2022.
  • Announcement of 10 finalists - May 30, 2022.
  • Semi-final pitch - on June 15, 2022 (10 shortlisted companies will present their ideas to local partners and audience in Ljubljana. The first 3 runners-up will participate in the Final Pitch).
  • The Final Pitch and the announcement of the winners - June 16, 2022 (The top 3 finalists will present their solutions for 3 minutes on the plenary stage at the end of Plenary Session 6; Urban Mobility Innovation).

The winners of the final pitch will be invited to conduct an extended proof of concept for their innovation on the streets of Ljubljana, supported by a comprehensive package of innovation funding from local and international partners. At the end of the pilot, winners can expect to have their product or service presented and evaluated to a global audience of cities, business leaders and advocates, which will greatly increase their market opportunities.

The City of Ljubljana is committed to testing and validating the winning ideas. We are looking for solutions that have the potential to scale and have a real impact on cyclists and the city.
